Wedding Impossible Review

Wedding Impossible is a romantic comedy based on a webtoon. This review is not fully spoiler-free. Rich heir Lee Do Han (Kim Do Wan) who is secretly gay asks Na Ah Jung (Jeon Jong Seo) his friend of 15 years who knows the secret to pretend to be his girlfriend and have a 3-year fake marriage contract with him. He has a brother Lee Ji Han (Moon Sang Min) who desperately wants Do Han to take over their grandfather’s company and doesn’t know his secret. Hijinks ensue as Ji Han starts falling in love with Ah Jung.

The male lead Ji Han is your regular rich jerk with rain trauma. His and Do Han’s mother died in a car crash on a rainy day while Ji Han was in the same crash so he blames himself for it. For some reason, while their grandfather wants Do Han to take over the company, he doesn’t seem to like Ji Han while Ji Han wants his validation. Ji Han is also not treated well by his step-siblings who wish to take over the company instead. For some reason Do Han is spared from that too.

Ah Jung is not your regular candy female lead. She has spunk and she doesn’t take things lying down. She is an actress who takes various small roles and wants to make it big and is struggling and learns things like how to fight or to ride a horse just in case. So when she gets the offer for a fake marriage, while at first she says no, she ends up accepting it. She is a good friend to Do Han and thinks this would be an opportunity to play the main character for once.

Ji Han on the other hand who does not know about his brother being gay or about the contract marriage, wants Do Han and Ah Jung to break up so that Do Han can marry Yoon Chae Won instead and take over their grandfather’s company. So while he admits to not liking Ah Jung much, he openly tells her he will make her fall in love with him and make her break up with his brother. Except that he is the one who starts falling for her.

While the drama gives us a flawed gay character it fails to develop him properly. Do Han is not a caricature mind you and he is not a completely flat character either but the drama could have fleshed out his character and his backstory more. He is an artist who comes back after 5 years of living abroad. His issue is running away instead of facing his problems like when he went away to New York instead of facing his ex who was beaten up for being gay, by whom the drama doesn’t say.

The drama is your standard K-drama fare. The story is fun and goes strong for the most part but loses its footing in the last few episodes. It has your usual drama cliches but changes have been made from the webtoon. The story ends up focusing more on the two main leads and ends up sidelining Do Han. I wish they had done more with him cause he’s mostly used as a plot device but I try to be optimistic as he’s treated a bit better than most gay K-drama characters. All three of our leads are flawed so don’t expect them to be perfect because you might end up being disappointed.
